Exploring the Heart of Indore: Rajwada Palace and Holkar Museum
On January 25, 2025, I had the pleasure of visiting two of Indore's most iconic landmarks: Rajwada Palace and the Holkar Museum. My journey began around noon, but before immersing myself in history, I decided to savour the flavours of Indore at the local eateries near Rajwada Palace.
The aroma of freshly prepared snacks and delicacies from nearby food stalls was irresistable. I indulged in a veg hotdog and dahi vada, both of which were absolutely amazing. These dishes come highly recommended from me and are a must-try for anyone visiting the area.
Rajawada Palace: A Timeless Marvel
Standing tall in the heart of the city, Rajwada Palace is a magnificent seven-story structure that beautifully blends Maratha and Mughal architecture styles. As I entered the palace, I was greeted by its majestic façade and the intricate wooden jharokhas (balconies). The grandeur of Rajwada immediately transported me back in time.
Inside, I explored the sprawling courtyards, marvelling at the detailed carvings and ornate decorations. Each corner of the palace seemed to whisper stories of its glorious past, showcasing the grandeur of the Holkar dynasty.

Visiting Hours:
Rajwada Palace is open to visitors from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. It is closed on Monday. It is advisable to visit in the day to avoid crowds and make the most of your time.

A Walk to the Holkar Museum
After spending an enriching hour at Rajwada Palace, I decided to visit the Holkar Museum, which is conveniently located within distance. The museum, is the treasure trove of the Indore's history and the Malwa region.
Inside the museum, I was captivated by the well-curated exhibits that highlighted the life and achievements of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, one of India's most revered queen. Her vision and leadership were instrumental in shaping Indore's cultural and architectural legacy. The museum also offered fascinating insights into the Maratha empire, with the displays of artifacts, weapons, manuscripts and paintings that brought history to life.

The Holkar Museum is open from 10:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Allocate at least an hour to fully appreciate its exhibits.

The ideal time to visit Indore and explore its historical landmarks is between October and March. During these months, the weather is pleasant, making it perfect for sightseeing.
